Get the Granger Look: Every Finish, Room by Room

This post contains affiliate links. If you buy through one, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only link to things I chose for this house or would happily choose again. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. I chose every finish in this post for this house, its layout, and its existing conditions. Before you order, check with your contractor or home improvement professional to make sure a product will work for your project.

Four months after the photo shoot, the thing I notice most about this house is the outside. I've watched it go from late spring through summer and now into fall, and it still catches me every time I drive past. Cyberspace shutters against Alabaster white is about as classic as it gets, and up on its little knoll, the house just stands out. I can already picture it with landscape lighting, dressed for Christmas, and I am having to restrain myself from decorating it. It's still on the market, still waiting on the right person to make it home, so that first wreath isn't mine to hang.

White 1942 Colonial Revival home with black shutters, a dark wood front door and a brick walk, set on a small green knoll.

What I can hand over is the list. The question I hear most about this house is some version of "where did you find that?", so here it is: every finish, room by room, plus where to find the pieces from the styled photos.

Before the list, though, one thing worth knowing. When people ask how to get this house's look, I think they're really responding to a strong foundation. These are finishes chosen to stand the test of time. Some of them can feel a little boring on their own, and that's okay. Refinishing floors, retiling a primary bath, replacing the tile in a bathroom your kids will grow up using: those are big, disruptive jobs that are hard to live through. You want to get them right the first time, so the room still works long after the renovation is complete.

What you layer on top is where the personality comes in: window treatments, artwork, accessories, furnishings. Even a wall color is an easy change compared with a renovation. A strong foundation gives you a canvas, and it lets your taste grow as you do, with new places you travel, new hobbies, and new seasons of life. I think people are really looking for a home that supports all of that, and I hope that's what they see here.

Many of the hard finishes in this house came through showrooms and trade sources rather than off a store shelf, so you won't find a link for every tile or countertop. Where something is available online, I've linked it. Part One walks through the fixtures and finishes room by room: a design board, photos of the space, and a numbered list. Part Two covers the styling, with each room’s accessories listed by the same numbers you’ll see on the boards.

If you fall for something you can't find, let's talk about your project.

Part One: The Foundational Fixtures & Finishes

The Foyer, Dining Room & Throughout the Home

Foyer, dining and whole-home design board: linen grasscloth, Natural Choice and Alabaster paint, gold ginkgo lighting, oak floor sample.

The wallpapers are what people ask me about most. Grasscloth felt right for the period and style of this house, and it gives the dining room a texture paint simply can't. It's just a shade deeper than the Natural Choice walls everywhere else, so you sense you've stepped into a special room before you can say why. A dining room is traditionally the most formal space in a house, and the wallpaper adds that little touch of elegance it deserves.

The Kitchen

Kitchen design board: hand-painted blue-and-white tile, brass sconce, white quartz sink, stainless faucet, Viatera quartz, satin nickel pulls.

The kitchen was the room I was least sure of the whole time. This house was a personal investment for our family, so I had to be responsible. I'm also an interior designer, and that comes with certain expectations. I went back and forth on how much to do and how bold to go. In the end, I chose classic American style, even knowing some people might read it as playing it a little safe. The house was never going to be mine, so I put the money where it lasts: well-made cabinets, quality countertops, and one wall that gets to be the star.

If I could use one finish again tomorrow without thinking twice, it's the hand-painted tile behind the range. A tile like that is 110% worth the splurge. The rest of the kitchen is fairly safe, and on purpose, but that one wall of small hand-painted squares gives the whole room its character. It's the designer touch I wanted, and it still leaves room for whoever lives here next to make the kitchen their own.

The Back Entry & Laundry Room

Back entry and laundry design board: light blue bird wallpaper, blue-and-white floor tile, brass flush mount, Providence Blue paint.

Why put something this pretty in a back entry? Because it's the door you'll actually use. It comes in right off the garage and the driveway, so whoever lives here next will walk through it more than any other. The spaces you see most should bring you the most joy, and this wallpaper does that for me.

Stand in the dining room with the laundry door open, and you can see straight through the kitchen and back entry, all classic, quiet, timeless finishes, and then a pop of Providence Blue at the very end. I love that little visual journey. It also earns its keep up close. This is a small, hardworking room, and let's be honest, who enjoys laundry? A color this pretty turns a 100% utility space into one you don't mind spending time in.

The Powder Room

Powder room design board: navy and gold floral wallpaper, pleated lampshade, brass vessel faucet, marble vessel sink and accessories.

The first time I saw the French Marigold paper on these walls, I gasped out loud. Out loud. It was so bold, and it turned the smallest room in the house into a little jewel box. My mind went straight to Mary Lou's bridal portrait, and it still does every time I walk in.

The Primary Bath

Primary bath design board: white tile, octagon floor tile, polished nickel Delta Cassidy fixtures, oval mirrors, quartz and paint.

The original doors throughout the house carry brass hardware, and I love brass. I use it constantly. But with the dark wood vanity, the warm Natural Choice walls, and the white tile, this bath needed something in between. Polished nickel bridges brass and the cooler satin and stainless finishes. It reads as a warm, beautiful metal and adds a touch of traditional charm.

The Upstairs Bath

Upstairs bath design board: penny tile, subway tile, Brittany Blue paint, chrome fixtures, pedestal sink, toilet and tub.

With the white tile wainscot, I wanted a little color above it, and Brittany Blue is a quiet nod to the all-blue bathroom that was here before. It's also the easiest thing in the room to change. If the next owner wants something different, a gallon of paint gets them there, and they still have a classic bath. The penny border works the same way. Against Brittany Blue, it reads blue; against a different wall color, it reads as a soft gray. It's a bit of a chameleon, ready for whoever comes to love this house.

Part Two: The Layers

If the finishes are the foundation, this is where the personality comes in. These are the layers from the styled photos, the pieces that made each room feel lived in, and the easiest part of this house to bring home to yours.

A lot of what you see in these photos came from vintage sites, Etsy, estate sales and my local antique shops. The most special finds are truly one of a kind, and that's on purpose: my design philosophy centers on personal style and thoughtful selection over anything mass-produced. I know not everyone is up for the hunt, though, so wherever I could, I've linked a retail option with the same look.

If there’s one thing I hope you take home from this post, it’s this. I know everyone wants to feel sure the hard finishes they’re choosing will work together and give them a foundation they can make their own. As a designer, borrowing ideas from a list like this one makes perfect sense to me. But the best homes are the ones where your personality and experiences show through in what you put in them. So take all the inspiration you want from a designer-curated look, and then choose and design for yourself.

Next time, on Under the Ginkgo, I’m taking you to Greece!
